Community Engagement: Final round!
Share your feedback by April 28 on the proposed five major themes ("Bold Moves") and key actions.
We're in the final phase of developing the City's first-ever Climate Action Plan and we need your voice to help shape it!
Until April 28, 2025, you’re invited to review the proposed climate actions and share your feedback. This is your chance to influence how Maple Ridge tackles climate change—by reducing greenhouse gas emissions, strengthening infrastructure, and building a healthier, more resilient community for everyone.
What’s New in Phase 3 Engagement?
Based on community input from earlier phases of engagement, the City has refined its climate actions and organized them into five "Bold Moves":
- Address Critical Climate Risks with and for the Community: Protect residents and infrastructure from extreme weather, wildfires, and poor air quality.
- Enhance City Infrastructure, Natural Assets and Services for Climate Readiness: Build climate-ready roads, green spaces, and drainage systems.
- Encourage Zero Carbon and High Efficiency Buildings: Support energy-efficient homes and buildings.
- Foster Sustainable and Active Transportation Choices: Expand walking, cycling, transit, and electric vehicle support.
- Support Low Carbon Economy and Agriculture: Help businesses and farmers adopt clean, sustainable practices.
This plan also includes:
- 55 new climate actions proposed, in addition to 102 actions already in progress.
- GHG reduction targets: 45% by 2030 (from 2010 levels) and net-zero by 2050.
- Climate risk assessment to adapt to climate impacts to help protect residents, infrastructure, and natural assets.

Purpose of the Climate Action Plan
The Maple Ridge Climate Action Plan will be designed to inspire action and advance community benefits while reducing emissions and addressing the climate challenges that are impacting residents and businesses.
The plan will outline actions that:
- Support the community adapting to climate change (i.e., reducing vulnerability and risk)
- Mitigate the impacts of climate change (i.e., reducing contributions of greenhouse gases)
- Strengthen community health and economic development
- Contribute to a liveable community that meets the needs of our diverse residents
- Enhance infrastructure that benefit and strengthens our City today and in the future
Community Engagement
Learning from diverse perspectives and thoughts will help shape the objectives and actions of the Climate Action Plan and create a city that is more resilient to the impacts of climate change. As we develop the plan we are committed to hearing from as many Maple Ridge community members as possible, including all residents, businesses, interest holders, Katzie q̓ic̓əy̓ (Katzie) and qʼʷa:n̓ƛʼən̓ (Kwantlen) First Nations, and Indigenous peoples.
Successful climate action requires:
- Collaboration between multiple levels of government and organizations
- Residents and businesses taking important steps to reduce emissions and build resilience
Maple Ridge is committed to developing an innovative, action-oriented Climate Action Plan tailored to the community's unique characteristics and needs.
The plan will identify actions that will help the City mitigate and adapt to climate change while continuing to improve infrastructure and services for residents.
The engagement objectives to support developing the Climate Action Plan are:
- Understand local experiences of past climate change impacts, barriers to accessing applicable services, and what measures are being taken to build resilience and reduce household emissions
- Better understand priorities for different climate mitigation and adaptation actions
- Develop a Climate Action Plan that is relevant to Maple Ridge community members
- Share outcomes from the project and keep the public up to date on progress
Phase 1 Engagement (May - August 2024)
The first phase of engagement will raise awareness, understand residents’ experiences with climate change impacts, and better understand community priorities for climate mitigation and adaptation actions. Feedback from this phase will help shape the City’s Climate Risk and Multi-hazard Risk Assessment.
Phase 2 Engagement (October - December 2024)
This phase will focus on gathering feedback on possible climate mitigation and adaptation actions and identifying the trade-offs these actions may have. The results of this phase will inform the prioritization of the Climate Action Plan goals and provide details relating to specific actions.
Phase 3 Engagement (April 2025)
The third phase of engagement will focus on collecting feedback from community members and local interest groups on the refined major themes and actions of plan and to report back on the public input received that helped shape the actions.
Thank you to everyone who participated in Phase 1 !
In our first phase of engagement we heard from residents about their experiences with the impacts of climate change and about their priorities for climate mitigation and adaptation actions.
Community engagement took place May 8 - July 16, 2024 and included a number of different ways for those interested in the Climate Action Plan to provide their input:
- General public survey (closed June 14)
- Local community events:
- April 20 Earth Day
- May 25 Haney Farmers Market
- June 8 Pride in the Park
- June 29 Haney Farmers Market - Canadian Multiculturalism Day
- Interest holder survey (closed July 16)
Thank you to everyone who participated in our Phase 2 community engagement!
From Oct 31 - Nov 18, 2024 we received over 200 survey responses, welcomed 45 interest holders to our workshops, and chatted with those who visited our booth at 2024 GETI Fest, gathering feedback on what climate mitigation and adaptation actions the City could take and how the community prioritizes them.
Through these efforts, we were able to learn more about what community members and local interest holders want the City to prioritize in the plan.

Background
The Maple Ridge Climate Action Plan is being funded by grants from the Province of BC and will identify strategic actions that can be taken at the municipal level. The plan will guide how the City uses federal and provincial funds available for climate action in the future.
Development of the Maple Ridge Climate Action plan (see Figure 1) recognizes that climate actions must be realistic and able to be implemented. The plan will identify actions that are in the complete or full decision-making control of the City, while identifying opportunities to advocate and influence climate actions by other levels of government or organizations.

Objectives and Development Timeline
The Maple Ridge Climate Action Plan will:
- Identify sources of greenhouse gas emissions and actions to reduce emissions
- Examine the risks of climate change impacts and hazards
- Include a climate-related multi-hazard risk assessment to better protect the community during flooding and extreme weather emergencies
- Identify actions to respond to and adapt to the changing climate and hazards
