Under Construction

Construction Update - December 2024

Concrete work is underway at the new park!

A curvy concrete curb incorporating boulders has been poured for the sand play area, and formwork is in place for the concrete seat wall along the edge of the playground. Concrete work for the plaza, water runnel and more seat walls will continue over the winter.

Construction Update - October 2024

The community's vision for this park is starting to take shape with earthworks happening this month. Machinery is on site reshaping the land into paths, open lawn, a scooter track, a solid base for a picnic shelter and two playground areas. Up next: bioswale construction.

Thank you to everyone who participated in our public engagement process last year. Please see below for the results of the survey and details on the finalized park design.

With our community's input we have finalized the park design. The park will incorporate the favourite features of the two concepts presented to the public during our second phase of engagement in summer 2023:

  • Generous open lawn area for unprogrammed activities
  • Covered picnic and gathering area
  • Playground with experiences for a range of ages and abilities
  • Waterplay and sand play area
  • Pumptrack for those sporting wheels
  • A variety of seating
  • A network of accessible pathways
  • Shady trees, garden beds, rain garden, and meadow planting

The playground will be split into two areas for junior and senior kids. It will include mounds and slopes for climbing up and sliding down, swings, spinner, and interactive play panels. Unique to the junior area will be a wood playhouse in the shape of a songbird for imaginative play. The area for senior kids will include the “cliff rider” which offers thrilling opportunities for climbing, teetering across from one platform to the next, and sliding down its firefighter's pole.

A network of accessible pathways will circulate through the park. Those looking for an exciting detour can travel along bumps and curves of the pumptrack as it winds through a meadow and rain garden.

Visitors will be able to enjoy a variety of seating, including intimate nooks under the canopy of a beautiful bosque of trees that pays homage to the property’s orchard heritage.

As a neighbourhood park we encourage nearby residents to watch the progress as the park takes shape.

Estimated Completion: Spring 2025

Community Engagement Phase 2 - Concluded

What We Learned (Summer 2023) - Public Survey #2 Summary

Thank you to all who participated in our second phase of community engagement.

The response to the two concepts was largely positive, with 77% of past participants agreeing that their input had been incorporated into the designs.

The top 5 most requested play equipment includes:

  1. Rock / Wall Climber
  2. Net Climber
  3. Log Climbers
  4. Slides – Spiral, Tunnel & Triple Slides
  5. Swings – Traditional belt swings

While both concepts were well received, the “Commons” was the more popular of the two designs. We moved forward with this design and refined it to address comments regarding playground layout and the need for additional shade spaces.

Community Engagement Phase 2 has now concluded. The public was invited to attend an Open House on July 26, 2023 and to take Public Survey #2 by August 8, 2023 with the goal of obtaining feedback on two concept designs:

Background

This neighbourhood park project is part of the City’s 2022 and 2023 Capital Plan. We are committed to increasing public access to green, social and active spaces! The design for this new park in the South Haney neighbourhood will be developed using community feedback through surveys, an open house and existing data from neighbourhood development and area plans.

Neighbourhood parks are intended to serve residents within a five-minute walk or approximately 400-500 meters radius. This new park will be just outside of the Maple Ridge town centre, near where Kanaka Creek meets the Fraser River. To the north are municipal sports facilities at Telosky Stadium that include synthetic fields, ball diamonds, lacrosse box, tennis courts, and lawn bowling. This park is situated adjacent to the Provenance development by Polygon.

Please note that "Pazarena Place Park" is a working title and not the park's official name. Naming the park will occur in the late stages of the project, before the official ribbon-cutting.

Level of Engagement - Involve

The engagement for this project is at the "involve" level of the International Association for Public Participation's (IAP2) Spectrum of Public Participation. This means that we will work with you (the public) to ensure that your concerns and aspirations are directly reflected in the project. We will also provide feedback on how public input influenced the decision.

Learn more about how we use the Spectrum as a foundation for community engagement here!
