Community Engagement
Final Design Update: December 14, 2023
We are excited to share the final design for the new playground at Maple Ridge Park. The playground design was guided by the feedback we received during the Summer 2023 public engagement process. View the final design.
We anticipate that construction will begin in Spring 2024.
The playground is centered around a 30-foot towering tree house and slide structure. Adventurers can clamber up to the top through a series of tree house pods, bridges and climbing obstacles. From here you can gaze across the park and into the trees before sliding through the curved tunnel slide.
At the ground level is an array of new and exciting top requested play features, including in-ground trampolines, a side by side zipline, and disc-swing. A mix of playground safety surfaces includes a “Salmon River ” of rubber surfacing for accessible routes to musical instruments, spinners, seesaw, slide, and swings.
This new playground features accessibility improvements including a new accessible slide, accessible spinner and accessible see-saw, along with improving the playground surfacing and adjacent pathways to be inclusive of a wide range of visitors. Learn more about new accessible and inclusive features for this playground in the FAQs section.
A new sand and water creative play area has also been incorporated beside a toddler play structure that mimics the style of the large treehouse play tower.
The play continues with the retention of the popular features from the existing playground, which include the main play structure, climbing boulder, and large multi-bay swing set.

The Community Engagement phase for the current project stage has now concluded. The public was invited to attend an Open House on August 15 or 24 and to take a Public Survey by August 27 with the goal of obtaining feedback on two concept designs:
What We Learned (August 2023) - Public Survey 1 Summary
Thank you to all who participated in our community engagement from August 8 to 27, 2023. We had nearly 800 surveys completed and great attendance as our two open houses in the park.
While both concepts were well received, the “Life of Trees” concept was the more popular of the two options.
The most popular swing types were Kid / Adult (belt) swing and Disc-Swing and for slides tunnel slides and spiral slides were favored.
The top 5 other playground equipment requested by the survey respondents were:
- Trampolines
- Zipline
- Tree Houses
- Play tower
- Log climbers
Participants expressed the need for an accessible and inclusive playground that provides play opportunities for a range of abilities and ages.
With all the amazing feedback we will move forward to deliver an exciting new playground at Maple Ridge Park. The final design will maintain the existing main play structure, climbing boulder, and large swing set.

As outlined in the 2023 Parks, Recreation and Master Plan, the city is beginning a planning process for renewal of Maple Ridge Park. This process will aim to identify opportunities to improve this park for the betterment of the community and the environment.
This project is part of the City's 2023 Capital Plan and will be completed in phases. The first phase of enhancements is the playground renewal project. The second phase of the upgrades includes replacing the splash park, which is planned to start in the fall of 2024.
