Parking lot construction closures starting May 19

Parking Lot Closures for Construction

To allow for construction and drainage improvements to Maple Ridge Park parking lots, including the addition of approximately 40 additional stalls and more accessible parking, the north and south lots will be temporarily closed during the following dates:

  • North parking lot on 132 Ave: Closed May 19 – 21
    • A portion of the north parking lot will remain temporarily closed to support construction staging and storage for the duration of this phase of the project. A full temporary closure of this lot will occur in future to complete the upgrades.
  • South parking lot on 232 St: Closed starting May 21 for at least 6 weeks
Overflow Parking Lot

A temporary overflow parking lot with more than 100 stalls will be available north of the park on 132 Avenue. Visitors can cross 132nd Ave/ Fern Crescent by using the marked crosswalks on either side of the new overflow lot. The lot will remain open on an interim basis to provide overflow parking during busy summer months.

Open Amenities

Several popular park amenities will remain open to the public during parking lot construction:

  • smaller paved side parking lot along 232 Street
  • washroom facilities
  • large picnic shelter
  • playground
  • spray park (scheduled to open in June)
Schedule Impacts

Construction work needs to be completed during good weather and according to the City’s contractor's schedule.

We recognize the impacts these closures will have on park visitors and will continue our efforts to ensure the upgrades meet project objectives while reopening the lot as soon as possible.

Overflow Parking Lot

A temporary gravel overflow parking lot will be added north of 132 Ave to accommodate more park visitors in summer season and during construction of the washroom, shelters and parking lots.

The new gravel lot will include over 100 new parking stalls (including 3 designated accessible stalls). Construction is planned for early 2026 with the overflow parking lot anticipated to open for summer 2026.

A crosswalk connecting to the multi-use path across the street is planned as a future addition.

Final Design

As part of the park improvements plan for Maple Ridge Park, the picnic shelters and washrooms will be replaced and the parking lots will be paved.

City Parks staff worked with a consultant team to bring together a design for three new picnic shelters, a new washroom building, and parking lot improvements using feedback provided community engagements for Maple Ridge Park. See the original concept plans in the 'Document Library' section on this page.

The following updates to the original concept plan were made based on what we learned from the community during public engagement in 2025:

  • Washroom size was increased from 6 to 8 stalls, and now includes 3 fully accessible universal stalls
  • Spray park changing needs were considered in the washroom, with benches and hooks added in every stall and baby change tables added in two stalls
  • Circulation for pedestrian access was improved around parking lots
  • An overflow parking lot has been added to the scope of this park improvements project

Final Design Plans and Renderings

Open the drop-downs below to see final plans, renderings and more details about each new element.

Three new picnic shelters are proposed to replace the existing shelter at Maple Ridge Park. They have been located to avoid impacting existing trees.

  • Two picnic shelters will each accommodate 30 people sitting at picnic tables.
  • One picnic shelter will accommodate 20 people sitting at picnic tables.
  • All shelters will accommodate additional space for gathering around the shelter and additional counter space for food preparation.
  • Each shelter wil be available to be booked individually.

The two existing gravel parking lots (on 232 Street and 132 Avenue/Fern Crescent) will be paved with stall lines added.

  • Parking capacity will be increased from approximately 95 existing gravel spaces to 133paved and lined stalls including 4 accessible stalls.
  • 4 trees will be removed to accommodate the parking lot changes.
  • 14 new trees will be planted as part of central bioswales designed to catch and filter water from the parking lots.

Public Art

Kwantlen First Nation artists Drew and Phyllis Atkins (K'wy'i'y'e Spring Salmon Studio) have developed a series of public art pieces to be incorporated into this project.

"Our approach to the art within Maple Ridge Park was to represent the ecosystem and the integration of indigenous design throughout the park. The four-legged, the winged and finned one are honored with designs of the Bear, Eagle and Salmon - still frequent visitors of the park during spawning season."

The renderings above show the art conceptually. More details about the art pieces will be shared as the project progresses and as the art pieces are installed.

Community Engagement

Thank you to everyone who participated in our community engagement!

Community engagement for the concept plan design was conducted from Mar 13 - Apr 6, 2025. An online survey (also available in print) was offered and two open houses were held: one at Maple Ridge Park, 2-4pm March 26 and one at Maple Ridge Leisure Centre, 3-6pm April 2.

We received over 200 survey responses and welcomed approximately 30 attendees to our open house events to provide feedback on the concept designs for the new picnic shelters, new washroom, and parking improvements.

What We Learned

Please see the graphic below for a summary of the data.

We will use what we learned to make updates to the design and develop detailed design drawings for construction.

The updated design for the picnic shelters, washrooms and parking will be shared in fall 2025.

Engagement Level

The engagement for this project is at the "consult" level of the International Association for Public Participation's (IAP2) Spectrum of Public Participation. This means that we will keep you (the public) informed, listen to and acknowledge concerns, and provide feedback on how public feedback influenced decision. Learn more about how we use the Spectrum as a foundation for community engagement here!

Background

Due to ageing facilities and infrastructure in Maple Ridge Park, the renewal of facilities in this destination park is needed to improve its functionality, accessibility, and sustainability to meet the current needs of the community and demands on the park.

The existing picnic shelters and washroom facilities have reached the end of their lifespan and the existing gravel parking lots are inefficient and difficult to maintain.

Maple Ridge Park History and Amenities

Maple Ridge Park is one of the most popular and oldest destination parks in the area, and the oldest park in Maple Ridge. Located along the South Alouette River at the corner of 232 Street and 132 Avenue/Fern Crescent, this park offers an expanse of mature forest nursing a wide array of native plants and wildlife. Each fall the South Alouette River welcomes large populations of spawning salmon.

The park’s amenities include:

  • New Playground (completed fall 2024)
  • New Spray Park (Completed summer 2025)
  • Picnic Shelters
  • Washrooms & Pit Toilets
  • Open Green Space
  • Park Benches
  • Parking
  • Picnic Areas
  • River Access
  • Trails
  • Dog Off-Leash Area

Improvements Plan

As outlined in the 2023 Parks, Recreation and Master Plan, a multi-year improvement project is in progress for Maple Ridge Park. This process will aim to identify opportunities to improve this park for the betterment of the community and the environment. A new playground was installed in Fall 2024 and construction of a new spray park began in Fall 2024, to be completed in Summer 2025.
