Concept Design
City Parks staff worked with a consultant team to bring together a concept design for three new picnic shelters, a new washroom building, and parking lot improvements using the preliminary feedback provided from earlier community engagements for Maple Ridge Park. Concept plans and renderings are shown below.

Site Plan
Picnic Shelters
Three new picnic shelters are proposed to replace the existing shelter at Maple Ridge Park. They have been located to avoid impacting existing trees.
- Two picnic shelters are proposed to each accommodate 30 people sitting at picnic tables.
- One picnic shelter will accommodate 20 people sitting at picnic tables.
- All shelters will accommodate additional space for gathering around the shelter and additional counter space for food preparation.
- Each shelter will be available to be booked individually.
Washroom
A new washroom building with 6 outside-access stalls is proposed to replace the existing washroom building. Building features include:
- Centrally located near the spray park
- Located to avoid impacts to existing trees
- 3 universally accessible washroom stalls, 3 standard washroom stalls
- Bench and wall hooks for changing in each stall
- Baby change tables in 2 of the accessible stalls
- Year-round drinking fountain and dog fountain
- Seating in a covered outdoor area
- Rain garden to capture and infiltrate water runoff from the roof
Parking Improvements
The two existing gravel parking lots (on 232 Street and 132 Avenue/Fern Crescent) will be paved with stall lines added.
- Parking capacity will be increased from approximately 95 existing gravel spaces to 137 paved and lined stalls including 4 accessible stalls.
- 3 trees will be removed to accommodate the parking lot changes.
- 14 new trees will be planted as part of central bioswales designed to catch and filter water from the parking lots.
Project Impacts
Construction is expected to last approximately 1 year from Fall 2025 to Fall 2026. During this time:
- Priority will be placed on protecting healthy trees throughout the park.
- Existing washroom facilities will remain open until the new washroom building is complete.
- Picnic shelters and picnic shelter bookings may be unavailable during construction.
- Uncovered picnic tables around the park will be available.
- Playground will remain open.
- Spray park will remain open, after is it completed in Summer 2025.
- Sections of pathways to be improved will be closed during construction.
Parking
The public will be notified of the schedule for parking lot construction. Visitors are encouraged to plan for limited parking during parking lot construction or explore other nearby river access parks.
Background
Due to ageing facilities and infrastructure in Maple Ridge Park, the renewal of facilities in this destination park is needed to improve its functionality, accessibility, and sustainability to meet the current needs of the community and demands on the park.
The existing picnic shelters and washroom facilities have reached the end of their lifespan and the existing gravel parking lots are inefficient and difficult to maintain.

Improvements Plan
As outlined in the 2023 Parks, Recreation and Master Plan, a multi-year improvement project is in progress for Maple Ridge Park. A new playground was installed in Fall 2024 and construction of a new spray park began in Fall 2024, to be completed in Summer 2025.
